What is Inductive Bible Study?

The three steps of inductive study are:
“Make sure to begin your time in the Word with prayer to and with the Author
of the Book and the Author and Perfector of our faith.” Precept.org
· Observe Discover what it says!
1. Read the text — Noting the setting and purpose
2. Re-read and mark words answering the questions:
who, what, where, when, how, and why
3. Organize information into lists, summaries, or questions about the text
Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law. Psalm 119:18
· Interpret Discover what it means!
1. Interpret scripture in the light of its context, literary style, and purpose
2. Interpret according to the correct meaning of words – use word study tools
3. Let Scripture interpret Scripture – read parallel passages
Give me understanding, that I may observe Your law and keep it with all my heart. Psalm 119:34
- Apply Discover how to live!
1. Ask: How does this relate to me—What commands should I obey? What sins should I avoid?
2. Mediate on truths in the passage
3. Live a changed life
I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies, for all my ways are before You. Psalm 119:168
